Its important to work with your child to help establish an appropriate pace. Part of the benefit of interactive learning games is that parents can monitor their childs progress and see how well things are going. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised at how much your kindergartener learns in a short period of time. Supplemental Education Though kindergarten math cant be taught through learning games alone, interactive digital activities provide a good supplement to traditional education. When kids continue to practice what theyve learned and become more comfortable with it outside the classroom, theyre bound to do better as they progress through school. Learning games also give you an opportunity to work with your child at home, helping to boost his or her grasp of basic kindergarten math concepts. The use of digital learning games to teach kindergarten math is by no means a stand-in for traditional education. However, when kids are presented with a fun, interactive learning environment in their own homes, they can build skills and get a deeper understanding of the concepts that will lead to better classroom performance and a more positive school experience.
Kindergarten ABC worksheets should have different activities to help children identify the various letters of the alphabet. The activities may involve very simple things like colouring, ticking, drawing a line to match items etc. Using attractive illustrations and cartoon characters would make it more fun for children. The activities should be graded, i.e initial activities should be very simple and easy (but should be fun with good pictures etc, so as to interest the child); later worksheets may involve a little bit more work. Care should be taken to give children worksheets that they are capable of doing. This involves understanding and monitoring the child continually, since the level of attainment of different children would often be quite different. The worksheet should challenge the child but not overwhelm her. If the worksheet is too easy or too repetitive, it may bore the child and she would not be happy. If the activity is too difficult it would frustrate her and she would not like to take up more sheets. The children should love to do the worksheets; they should not be thrust upon them. Also doing only worksheets alone repeatedly would not be very productive. You should have a range of physical games and activities as well that would reinforce the concepts learnt.
The reason why poetry is usually learnt by heart at this stage is that kindergarten children are rarely fully proficient in the official language at this stage. They can normally sing it and say repetitive stuff but when it comes to reading there is still some time. Their kindergarten teachers will know this and that is why songs and poems are always a main feature in the education of children. You should borrow the example from them and also start getting your children to recite poems and songs for the kindergarten graduation ceremony.
But all-day kindergarten has its detractors as well. Academic research published by Rand Education, The Goldwater Institute, and other reputable institutions cites empirical studies which assert that the boost received by an all-day kindergarten student may be short lived, with much of the benefit dissipating within a few years. So, not surprisingly, there is valid research available to support both sides of the debate. However, in researching this topic we found that detractors cite plenty of practical objections that strike closer to home and resonate even more than academic research. First, many parents question whether their children (typically boys, whose psychological development takes a more roundabout path) are "ready" for all-day kindergarten. They have seen their children slowly adapt to the pre-school environment, which for the majority of kids translates into just a few hours a day, three days a week. They just dont foresee their child being able to transition to the larger time commitment of all-day kindergarten. For these parents, a half-day 5 day per week kindergarten seems a more logical way of bridging the gap from preschool to elementary school.
The study at the University of Virginia showed that in 1998, 31 percent of kindergarten teachers thought most children should learn to read while in kindergarten. By 2006, 65 percent of kindergarten teachers agreed with this idea. For many parents, the kindergarten report card will be the first report card they receive as parents. Many might be surprised. Some kindergarten reports cards can be several pages long. National standards for education can certainly impact how educators detail and report a childs progress. In the past, kindergarten programs may have formatted report cards based on what was important to parents. Now report cards are often formatted to reflect how a child is performing according to state standards.
Furthermore, it is certainly true that children from some families where a certain degree of nurturing is not available will actually benefit more, socially and psychologically, from additional time in the classroom where age appropriate stimulus is available. For these students, more time at home may just result in more television, more video games, or in some cases more neglect. And, as alluded to earlier, we are a nation which is becoming a net outsourcer of skilled labor. Countless thousands of American jobs have been shipped overseas to harder working and better trained workforces who are able to provide more value for less money. If the U.S. hopes to maintain its status in the global marketplace, then we must impart academic rigor on our youth as often-and in this case as early-as possible.
