Letter Recognition As your child learns sounds, they will also learn to recognize the letters of the alphabet. A great way to teach this is with a printable worksheet that shows the letter, a picture, and the name of the letter - like Annie Apple! Using pictures While your child is still learning to recognize the letters of the alphabet, you can use pictures (or the actual item) to help them practise their sounds. Find pictures of a bird, a ball, a bat, a bath, a book, and so forth to practice the letter b. Choose a letter for the day and encourage your child to find items that start with that letter around the house. Printable worksheets should have nice exercises for this as well.
Types of Preschools from Which to Choose When I sent my daughter to nursery school, I wanted the most nurturing environment I could find. I chose a wonderful, progressive program in downtown Manhattan. A few years later, when we were interviewing uptown for a selective girls school, the admissions director told me that when my daughter would be interviewed there, they would test her. She would be expected to draw circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. My eyes opened wide in shock and I said, "But my daughter doesnt know how to draw those!" She looked at my daughters file and said (rather snootily), "Oh yes, your daughter went to one of those downtown play schools."
You can make math interesting and meaningful for children with fun materials, games and activities. Math for preschoolers goes beyond counting. Other math concepts include patterns, sorting and sets, number recognition, shapes, comparisons, measurements, time, money, addition and subtraction. Throughout the day children use these concepts and learn math in ways that are natural for them. Simply playing with blocks introduces them to shapes. When they remind you that the big hand is on the 12 and therefore it is time for lunch; they are telling time. Most of what preschoolers learn about math does not come from dittos and worksheets. It comes from activities.
Another thing to bear in mind when we teach our preschoolers is that we must strive to be sensitive, discerning and empathetic towards the learning capacity of our children. Balance and moderation is necessary in order to help our children reach their full potential. Pushing too hard and too fast wouldnt be a good idea if we would like our child to be developed the proper way. We must be patient to teach them depending on their ability and pace. Taking into consideration the fact that playing is a kids natural way can help them to develop their healthy emotional up building. Being playful is a normal stage in a kids life. It can help stimulate their creativity and develop moral, mental and emotional skills. Therefore nurturing our child means giving them chance to explore and discover the things they enjoy.
For kindergarten, children are expected to know the basic shapes, recognize them and identify how they form part of other items. They may also be expected to be able to draw the shapes - not perfectly, but certainly recognizably. There are many ways to encourage and help your child to learn about shapes. Because shapes are all around us, it is easy to play Find the Shape at home, in the car, in the store and elsewhere. Select one shape at a time to concentrate on, rather than trying to find all the different shapes. A good set of worksheets for preschool will help your child recognize different shapes, see how they form part of other objects, and help them learn how to draw them. Drawing shapes is the precursor to learning how to write, and a good set of worksheets should take you step-by-step through this process until your child is drawing shapes on their own, free hand. Look out for worksheets that combine learning shapes with the use of different colors, as this is particularly effective in reinforcing the shape names.
Even babies can recognize the difference between a circle and square, using their sight and sense of touch to distinguish between them. However, learning the names of the different shapes is not an inborn ability, but it is a necessary step in your preschoolers education. Children need to learn the names of shapes so that they can identify them verbally and in writing and compare the various shapes and how they are used. These are basic skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. Learning shapes helps your child identify objects as well as letters. Letters are made up of circles, triangles and lines - think of the circles in b, d, g, p, q, or the parts of a triangle found in k, v and w. Drawing the curved lines of a circle or oval shape helps your child to write letters such as f, u, m, n, j, and the lines in squares helps your child to write i, l, k, p, q and so on. Often, recognizing the shapes in the letters helps a child to recognize the letter too, important for developing reading skills.
