Spoken languages influence and practical factors Without spoken language, writing would have definitely evolved differently as it has been.Writing itself is capable of evolving alone. But, in reality, speech influences its evolution significantly. Since they are associated, writing and speech influence each other . Writing and speech have their own characteristics, legibility for writing, pronounceability and comprehensibility for speech. During their interaction, they are affected by each other and in the mean time try to maintain their own characteristics. Almost all present-day writings are pronounceable. That seems evidence that writing represents speech. However, from another angle, we also see that almost all speeches are writable. It should be that they converge from independent origins into tight association, instead of simply one conforming to the other. Convergence is obvious in alphabetic systems but not in pictographic systems. Tighter association leads to greater inter-influence. Tightly-associated speech and writing achieve mutual benefits as writing stimulates more speaking and speech induces more writing. Via association, speech sounds came to be a major source of new word/expression creation. Some new symbols are created or borrowed to represent language sounds. Diacritics are added to change sound value. These changes make writing representing speech better . As speech sounds can be represented by different written symbols/words/phases, the legibility (visual shapes) of symbols/words/phases is pondered over for choosing desired ones. During the interactions between speech and writing, sounds could affect the formation and evolution of writing systems. But the final determinant of its success is the visual legibility, fit for processing, easy to be memorized and systemized. The visual form, instead of association/interaction with spoken language, is the central and deterministic in writing systems evolution. Spoken language works as a bridge between meaning and writing. It is not central in evolution process. On the contrary, it attaches to its writing system for survival, growth and spread. We hypothesize that the writing systems evolve towards more-legible alphabetic systems by means of visual refinement, during interactions with speech sounds.
In the initial stages you are only required to start with learning and mugging up the shapes and sounds of the alphabet. You may not worry about writing the alphabet till you have mastered the shapes and sounds of all the alphabets and some typical words that are often used in the language. As in English language Arabic also has a song that can be used to learn the alphabets easily. Even though this seems to be a childish method of learning the language, you have to start in a way akin to children when they first learn their mother tongue. There are no vowels in Arabic language but analogous to English vowels there are alphabets in Arabic that serves similar purpose and helps in determining the pronunciation of different words in Arabic. Mentioned earlier, the symbols that are placed above and below the character act as the vowel and determine how the word or the alphabet is suppose to sound. Kasr-aa is one of these symbols that is notated as slanted lines beneath some letters. Fat-haa is another such symbol that is placed above a letter. When these symbols are encountered a sound is added to the letter.
We can see alphabetic system and Chinese have directional characteristic. Alphabetic systems are dominantly written horizontally while Chinese is traditionally written vertically. Alphabetic sequence is lengthened while Chinese characters are enclosed. That might be due to horizontal-vertical visual span asymmetry. Horizontal lengthening may have led to development into alphabet while enclosing results in complexity. Writing direction and complexity of symbols might be correlated. Lets employ the visions characteristic to explain how symbols grow in horizontal/vertical directions. The best shape of a single symbol might be oval resembling macula. It would have greater width than height. When a sequence of symbols is read and one of the symbols is fixated, the eyes also take in info of symbols adjacent to the fixated symbol. The visions power is thus shared by the several adjoining symbols. If the visual span is larger, the symbols at and around fixation will be more simplified. Hence horizontally arranged symbols can be more simplified.
The Greek alphabet is the first real alphabet and it is also the predecessor of the Latin alphabet. The early forms of this alphabet are written with the use of a syllabary. Also, it is adapted from the Phoenician alphabet with changes in the use of letters. The original alphabet only contains 24 letters. In Phoenician, the letters used were named after an object whose name started with that letter. Nowadays, there are a lot of alphabets that are being used today that were developed from the Greek alphabet. You can also find Greek letters that appear outside of the written Greek language in some forums such as mathematics and fraternity names.
Have you ever imagined what the world today would be if ancient people hadnt invented the alphabet? I dont dare to think about it but it must be such the worst of the worst. Without the alphabet, mankind would never have advanced to the levels we have today. If alphabet hadnt been invented, book would never have appeared and consequently people would be uneducated and life would be boring. You wouldnt know anything about history, the human knowledge wouldnt have been preserved and you also wouldnt be able to read my essay. We would be narrow minded and shallow. Our imagination would be limited. There would be no paper, no printing press, no television, no Galileo Galilei, no William Shakespeare, no Charles Darwin, no Albert Einstein,... Instead of that, tolerance would be low and the world would have been destroyed by war and cruel. In my opinion, it would be quite a miserable world where no one can read, write, or think freely. To be honest, if alphabet hadnt existed, there would be a new way of communicating ideas.
All types of alphabet coloring pages available over the internet are an extension of Preschool Alphabet activities and crafts work. They have been designed in such ways that create interest in the minds of children. Simply teaching the preschools with boring alphabets may have negative impact on them. They may not find things interesting and may feel that you go too strict with them when they cannot pronounce or write the letters or able to relate to objects or things that start with the any alphabet initially. For instance they may find it difficult to remember tough words like H for Horse or House or Home. You may think it is silly, but remember they are small kids, what is easy for you may not be easy for them.
