Remark In the present world, two types of incompatible writing systems exist. One is horizontal alphabetic system. The other is vertical logographic system. Representative for the former is Latin alphabet. Representative for the latter is Chinese system. Horizontality and verticality are responsible for these two types, respectively. Some vertical non-logographic systems, such as Mongolian script and Japanese syllabary, are intermediate systems influenced by these two types. These two types are both fit for reading, for their respective directions. One may think that written Chinese is primitive for it is poor in representing speech sounds. Here we point out that it is an advanced system in top-down direction. With that direction writing would never develop into alphabet on its own. When horizontal writing meets vertical writing, alphabetic system overpowers logographic system because horizontal extension is fitter for our eyes.
But, like most Oriental peoples, they wrote from right to left. When the Greeks took their alphabet, they changed the direction of writing and wrote from left to right as we do today. In doing this, they turned the letters around. You can see, in the first article in this encyclopedia-the article on the letter A-how we got our present letter by the turning around of the ancient letters. The exact form of our capital letters was developed chiefly by the ancient Romans. Our small letters, and our handwriting, were developed because with them it is possible to write faster. The English alphabet, like other alphabets that are used throughout the world, is very far from perfect. There are many people who are anxious to change it so that it will be easier to tell how a word should be pronounced the first time you read it. Reading is more difficult when a single letter, such as A, can be pronounced in six different ways. Still, the modern alphabet is one of the greatest works of the human mind, and has been at least as responsible as anything else man has done for the growth of civilization.
As time goes on, show your child how to print his or her name and, as alphabet learning progresses, dont forget that both capital letters AND small letters are equally important. Help your child sign his or her first name on any pictures that are drawn, and on any birthday cards to grandma and grandpa, etc. The stronger the connection grows between alphabet letters, sounds and written words, the more reading-ready your child becomes. Muster up all of your creativity. Pose your body in the shape of a simple letter thats familiar to your child and have him or her guess what letter you are. Outstretched arms and you have the letter "T," arms and legs out at angles, and youve created an "X". At Christmas time, lay a string of twinkly Christmas lights on the floor and form letter shapes with them. Lay building blocks or dominoes end-to-end to create giant letters. Perhaps try alphabet magnets, with one animal picture for each letter of the alphabet. You might line them up on your refrigerator to make a complete alphabet. Then at unexpected moments, like while youre preparing breakfast, choose an object in the room, such as a cup and spell it out on the fridge. Spell family members names, play a simple scrabble game, or leave secret messages.
Other activities for kindergarten include jigsaw puzzles. There are also worksheets that teach children about some biblical characters, and how to help a community. These activities are not limited to individual work. There are also worksheets that require a group effort to finish the task. This way, children learn to work in a team. This is a very effective group activity in helping them realize the importance of cooperation and teamwork. At a young age, kids are first taught to write letters in print only. When kids reach the age of eight to ten, they are taught how to write in cursive. They may find this quite difficult and boring at first. But one fun way to teach them this is to use worksheets also.
The writing represents speech notion Speech and writing originated independently of each other. Human speech probably appeared long time before writing. Earliest writings developed from drawings. They were of visual origin, as pictographs, ideograms. As time went by, writings were spatially arranged sequentially in lines, corresponding to the sequential property of speech in time domain. As writing systems evolved in the alphabetic direction, writings and speech associated with each other tighter and tighter, continuing to present day. The alphabets lost pictographic property. As alphabetic systems have replaced their pictographic predecessors and gained prevalence, it seems natural to conclude that the evolution of writing systems is to better represent language sounds. This conclusion is elegant, intuitive, reasonable and basing on facts and researches. It certainly cannot explain some cases, for instance, the Chinese didnt evolve into alphabet. However, the Chinese characters are blamed to be too complex to represent speech. The modern Chinese writing is more tightly associated with spoken Chinese than ancient Chinese writing does. Moreover, characters have been simplified in mainland China. Chinese writing looks like taking a small step towards representing speech. Little doubts have been casted on this conclusion, although many scholars consider writing as more than simply representing speech. Representing speech seems a destined direction. Lets be a little skeptical on this natural conclusion.
