One activity that is a wonderful math lesson for preschoolers is called "A New Kind of Basket Ball". For this activity, line up five baskets or bins in front of the children and label them with the numbers one through five. These number labels should not only have the written number digit, it should also have dots that represent the corresponding number. Place fifteen balls in front of the children as well. Ask them to put the right amount of balls into each basket; one ball should be in the basket with the number one on it and so on. This activity teaches math appropriately to preschoolers. Children not only need to experience math with concrete objects but also visually and symbolically through abstract activities. The concrete objects in this activity are the balls. The balls represent materials that the children can see and touch and use to visualize and verbalize their thoughts. The number labels on the baskets represent visualization. The children should be given illustrations or pictures that represent the concept you are teaching them. The dot on the number one card, two dots on the number two card, and so on, illustrates each number for the children. The dots also represent the symbol of the numbers they are working with.
Sorting is another basic skill that is perfect for your preschooler to start learning. Of course you can sort anything you want or have, but building blocks, magnetic mazes, and stacking toys are a great way to keep the learning fun and keep the work from looking like work! There are so many different ways to sort things- color, size, shape, smell, touch (soft, rough, smooth, wet, dry, cold, hot, etc.) However, I would recommend that you only use one concept of sorting at a time for your preschooler. For example, if you are having your child pick out the blue blocks do not also ask them to pick out the blue square blocks. This is a concept meant for older children. If a young child is given a task that is too difficult or complex they are more likely to give up and not want to try again. Magnetic mazes are a great toy that gives your child a clear goal, allows them to practice visual tracking, hand-eye coordination, and of course sorting. Dont forget to allow your child to use their independence when sorting as well. For example, give them a small pile of buttons of different colors, shapes, sizes, materials, etc. and ask them to sort them. Different children will sort them differently, one child might sort them by color and another child might sort all of the plastic buttons on one pile and all of the metal in another. The important part is that they sorted correctly according to their own method and can tell you what they did.
Although preschool workbooks are popular, many parents like the convenience that is associated with printable preschool worksheets. The only problem with printable preschool worksheets is that they can use up a lot ink, especially if the selected preschool worksheets are in colored ink. To save yourself money and printer ink, you may want to search for preschool worksheets that are in black and white. If you are unable to find black and white preschool worksheets that you like, you can still go for the colored ones; however, you may want to consider adjusting your printer settings. Instead of having them print off in colored ink, you may want to adjust your settings to gray scale. This will save you a considerable amount of money and printer ink, especially in the long run. Doing this can also create an additional activity for your child, as you can have them color all the pictures themselves.
Many people believe that you have to have a knack for math in order to do well in it. However, understanding the basic principles of math does not need any innate talent, or a genius intellect. What it does need is a change in attitude, and a solid foundation of basic skills on which to build. Mathematics worksheets can help you provide your preschooler with a solid grounding that will help them conquer math. The first secret you need to discover is that your children will follow your lead. Not a big secret to most parents, but sometimes we are unaware of the influence we have on our children. How often have you sat faced with a list of figures - balancing the check book, credit card statement or filling out tax forms - and muttered about how much you hate math, how hard it is, how you just dont have a head for math? You need to stop yourself right now! What you are telling your child is that math is a horrid chore, a difficult task, and one that you either have the talent to do, or you dont. You are making your child anxious about a school subject that they will have to do for many years - and a skill that they will need for the rest of their lives. You are also telling them that if they struggle with math, it just means that they dont have the talent for it - and it is therefore not their fault, and there is nothing they can do about it.
Are you the parent of a toddler or a preschooler? If you are and if you are interested in educating them from home, you may turn to preschool workbooks. These workbooks are a collection of preschool worksheets combined into one book. They are sold at an unlimited number of retailers and if used in the proper way, they can benefit your child in more ways than one. If this is your first time attempting to buy preschool workbooks for your child, there are a number of important points that you should take into consideration. One of those points is age recommendations. Most workbooks for preschoolers will come with a recommended age. This age is often three to five years. If there is no age listed, be sure the workbook is designed for preschoolers. Although this may sound simple, you will find that many educational workbooks are similar in appearance; therefore, it can be relatively easy to mix them up.
If you or your children prefer to not get their hands messy, you can use plastic zip-loc bags. Put the paints into the bags and tape them closed just to be sure they dont come open. Next put these in the water table and let the children press, squeeze, pick up, and observe what is happening. ( I do like to put these into a deep water table or if you dont have one, you can use plastic tubs. This is just a second precaution in case the bag comes open.) Your kids can take the different color bags and overlap them to see what new color they see; another way to discover color mixing. They enjoy the feel of the bags, the paint, the texture, and the coolness of the liquid inside.
