Many people believe that you have to have a knack for math in order to do well in it. However, understanding the basic principles of math does not need any innate talent, or a genius intellect. What it does need is a change in attitude, and a solid foundation of basic skills on which to build. Mathematics worksheets can help you provide your preschooler with a solid grounding that will help them conquer math. The first secret you need to discover is that your children will follow your lead. Not a big secret to most parents, but sometimes we are unaware of the influence we have on our children. How often have you sat faced with a list of figures - balancing the check book, credit card statement or filling out tax forms - and muttered about how much you hate math, how hard it is, how you just dont have a head for math? You need to stop yourself right now! What you are telling your child is that math is a horrid chore, a difficult task, and one that you either have the talent to do, or you dont. You are making your child anxious about a school subject that they will have to do for many years - and a skill that they will need for the rest of their lives. You are also telling them that if they struggle with math, it just means that they dont have the talent for it - and it is therefore not their fault, and there is nothing they can do about it.
Truly, your little cute child has all the capacity to learn virtually anything while he is yet innocent-looking infant. According to researches, children who were trained and developed during these informative years proved to be more alert and more active in school than those who were not. Im not saying that if you dont train your child during these early years will totally be a failure. No child is born a genius, and none is born a fool. Other children have inherited skills and talents from their parents that contribute to their confidence as they grow up. Others too who were not pre-schooled can learn things easily. But theres a big difference in stimulating the childs brain during their early years than not at all. See below:
I was offended that she viewed the school I loved so much that way. But what could I do? Meanwhile, I ran into a neighbor who had sent her daughter to a fancy uptown traditional nursery school. She was applying her daughter to the same girls school. So I said to her, "Guess what! The kids are going to have to draw circles, squares, triangles and rectangles to get in." My neighbor said, "Oh, Erica can do that. They spent a whole month on a shape unit at her school." In fact, Erica had produced an entire shape book for every major shape (including diamonds!) during that unit. So, when you choose a nursery school for your child, whichever type of school you choose, remember that at the end, there is a test if you want private school or a gifted program. Even if you send your child to a regular ol public kindergarten, she will still be tested in the very early days for placement in slow, average and advanced ability groups. Some schools prepare kids for these tests and others dont. Frankly, I probably would have chosen the same progressive school I chose no matter what because we loved it. But I wish I had understood from the beginning that there would be an important test at the end and if the nursery school didnt prepare my child, I would have to.
You can make math interesting and meaningful for children with fun materials, games and activities. Math for preschoolers goes beyond counting. Other math concepts include patterns, sorting and sets, number recognition, shapes, comparisons, measurements, time, money, addition and subtraction. Throughout the day children use these concepts and learn math in ways that are natural for them. Simply playing with blocks introduces them to shapes. When they remind you that the big hand is on the 12 and therefore it is time for lunch; they are telling time. Most of what preschoolers learn about math does not come from dittos and worksheets. It comes from activities.
If education is your goal, you may want a set of worksheets designed to teach your child all of the basic skills they will need for school. 2. To Pay or Not to Pay? There are hundreds if not thousands of free printable worksheets available online. These are ideal for filling time or keeping the kids busy on a rainy day, but few of them offer a systematic set of worksheets with activities designed to teach your children a specific set of skills. If education is your aim, you may have to spend a little to get useful, comprehensive worksheets that actually help your child to learn. 3. Quality vs Quantity Some free worksheets are not good quality - the pictures are fuzzy, backgrounds print grey or speckled - and children tend to notice these things. If you are using the worksheets to educate your child, you may want to choose good quality worksheets that encourage your child to produce good quality work. After all, its a little difficult to ask your child to color within the lines and work neatly when the worksheet they are filling in hasnt done the same.
Studies have shown the immediate effects of preschool education for children during their first 5 years of life. Children are like sponges; they soak in knowledge and continue to learn on a daily basis. It is essential to instill the idea of education and learning in children from a very early age, even before they start Pre- School. This helps young minds develop an interest in learning and prepares them for formal school. It is important to introduce your children to preschool skill building and intellectual learning programs that build a solid foundation that lasts a lifetime. A well designed Pre-School Educational program produces long-term improvement in school success; which includes higher achievement test scores, lower rates of grade retention and higher educational attainment. Research has also shown that starting early learning increases a childs performance throughout their Elementary School years and drastically reduces high school or college dropout rate and has shown excellent adult productivity.
