Next, some parents believe that the additional child-parent "quality time" available when a child is in half-day kindergarten is of more benefit than all-day kindergartens additional academics. These parents prefer to spend the additional time with their children bonding and visiting destinations such as the childrens museum, the zoo, a local park, or the YMCA. For these parents the kindergarten year represents a way of preparing their child, and frankly themselves, for the transition to all day school. And on a local level, some parents have expressed concerns that our schools are too crowded to allocate additional classrooms to all-day kindergarten sections. Others have claimed that the district has too much on its plate right now resolving other fiscal and practical issues. As my husband and I often say to each other, "the truth is somewhere in the middle." It is my perspective that all-day kindergarten is certainly the right choice for some while being inadvisable to force upon others. Some kids will benefit in the long run from the additional academic rigor, while other kids lack the maturity to stay engaged for the entire day and will be frustrated by it. The best solution is to have both options available, with the choice ultimately being left to the parent(s).
Ideally, reports would benefit the child, the educator and the parents. The grading process (when done correctly) lets parents and teachers know whether the child is grasping and understanding certain ideas and concepts. Reviewing the childs work allows teachers the opportunity to see whether the child is ready to move on to other things or needs more time. The grading process also helps teachers evaluate the kindergarten class as a whole. If the majority of the students are doing well, the class may be ready to move on to new topics. This also helps teachers understand and decide whether certain teaching methods and lesson plans are working.
In November 2007, our local board of education outlined its intention to standardize all-day kindergarten instruction across the district beginning with the 2008-2009 school year. According to the board, their enthusiasm is buoyed by a successful pilot program which has been running within the district, as well as research which supports the notion that all-day kindergarten enhances a students self-confidence and independence, leading to higher progress in social and learning skills. The move represents a significant departure from the traditional half day kindergarten routine (which, in actuality, is not even a half day), which was intended to provide youngsters with an introduction to their elementary years and where they could engage in a few hours of social interaction. That being said, a significant percentage of districts both state-wide and nationally have embraced all-day kindergarten. And certainly weve all heard about Saturday school and other examples of academic rigor placed upon young students abroad, particularly in the Far East. It is worth noting that this practice is alive and well the community where I live, within certain ethnic communities through their civic and religious centers.
Letters and Numbers Most kindergarteners are expected to have a basic understanding of their letters and numbers. They dont need to be reading books when they start the first day of school but being able to recognize the letters of the alphabet and basic numbers is important. Children should also know how to write most of their letters and numbers and be able to recite them. Whether or not your child went to preschool, you can reinforce these skills at home with kindergarten games for kids online. There are a variety of sites that work on these important skills, as well as provide printable worksheets to allow your child even more practice without the use of a computer. Basic Motor Skills The ability to hold pencils and crayons, use a paintbrush and cut with scissors are also skills that are assumed will be mastered upon entering kindergarten. As a parent, you can help your child hone these skills by providing plenty of practice at home. If you are not the crafty type, there are many websites available that offer simple instructions for basic arts and craft projects that allow children to master their motor skills before entering school.
Its not wise to use classical poetry during kindergarten graduation. Classical poetry is not appealing to many people including adults. It is therefore unreasonable to expect that young kindergarten children will be enthusiastic at such an early stage. Kindergarten graduation then calls for the use of local poetry perhaps in the dialect of the family so that you are not overburdening their young minds with very heavy stuff. Those parents who have done this before say that when you let children get involved in the creation of the poetry they tend to be very enthusiastic and it creates an atmosphere of happy informality which is ideal for such kindergarten graduation ceremonies.
Most of us tend to think of bingo as a game played mainly by older people, but today variants of the game can also be found in many schools and even kindergartens. The difference is that whereas the version of bingo played by seniors is principally enjoyed as a leisure activity, the version played in schools and kindergartens is played as a learning game, and is particularly used for teaching the alphabet, phonemes, and reading in general. There are a number of different versions of bingo that can be played in introductory reading classes, including: 1. Letter bingo - The most basic version of the game, one that students will quickly progress through is to play bingo using bingo cards printed with letters. The teacher acts as bingo caller, and either says the letter name or gives the sound of the letter, and students must find the matching square on their bingo cards.
