With over 25 years of experience with children, and two of them as a kindergarten teachers aide, I can tell you that your childs first days and weeks of kindergarten can be a smooth transition. I had many children in my kindergarten that just needed to be prepared for kindergarten by being told what to expect in order to feel safe walking into the classroom. What will the first day be like? What will we learn? What kind of field trips will we go on? Most important, will anyone at school think Im special? Who are all the adults I will be spending time with while Im at school? What happens in the classroom throughout the year? Make sure you read as many books about going to kindergarten to your child as you can. Look for books that talk about all aspects of the school year. Take your child to the school and walk them around the different classrooms they will be spending time in. The library, the gym, the music room, the kindergarten classrooms, the school office, and the playground. Introduce him to the principal, the secretary, the teachers, and the teachers aides. You will give them the best possible start to their school year by helping them feel comfortable in their new surroundings.
The learning should be real-worldly. It is easiest to learn and remember when whatever is learned is immediately applied to a practical, real-life situation. You should use every opportunity to teach and regularly reinforce basic concepts taught, in real-life and in real-time. For instance, during snack-time, if a child is eating a biscuit, you can say - B for biscuit. While waiting for a school van, you can say - V for Van and so on. Whether you are home schooling a child or teaching in a classroom do make the learning a very interactive exercise with lots of educational activities and games. Completing the worksheet activity can give children an immense sense of accomplishment.
Songs and poems can be a great addition to your kindergarten graduation ceremony as they service to entertain and educate those who listen to them. Some children become religious, quite late in their lives so you might experience some resistance to the idea in the first instance. The Montessori system tells us that children are likely to mimic the way that they were brought up so if they were religious in the family the introduction of prayer will not be seen as a big problem. The key is to recognize the individuality of kindergarten children even in matters of getting spiritual so you must never take a homogeneous approach to bringing them up.
Get your child some very basic problem solving worksheets. These are things that you can do with your child. Many of these will work on basic skills like counting and thinking skills. Dont go overboard on this as your child might not think its fun anymore if they are pressured to do them one after the other. Teach your child how to get dressed properly. He or she might not be able to do it all but they should at least understand how the clothing works. This makes things like bathroom breaks a bit easier on the teachers and your child. Try to get your child to know some very basic things. Teach them the colors, numbers, letters, and everyday names for common items. You can do a bit more if you want but this should be enough for kindergarten.
These books are really good, especially if you have the book as a colouring book that you can fill out together. Heres a good activity: say the sound like "b says...buh buh, ball" and then students race to colour in their balls in their workbook. You can hang these up after and everyone will have fun. Find the mistake: These activities are terrible for young kids. An example might be, cross out the word that doesnt begin with the right letter, or correct the misspelled word. I know, seems like common sense, but Ive seen some teachers try to teach young children using these kind of word sheets which are just ridiculously confusing for young learners.
Its September and time for your child to start kindergarten. You have purchased the school supplies, the new backpack, new clothes, and new shoes. The first day of school you are so excited for your big kindergartener! But when you get to school, it is quite obvious that he is not as excited as you are. This school is much bigger than his preschool. It is full of unknowns. And he definitely does not want you to leave! Many a child will not allow her parents to leave her in the classroom with the teacher for weeks into their kindergarten year. There are many books about kindergarten that help children with ABCs and 123s and those are very helpful. But when a child needs to feel comfortable about being left in a classroom, what that child needs is a book that will walk him through the kindergarten year in a way that would help him feel more comfortable about his parents leaving him in the classroom.
