The Chinese still use this kind of writing in syllables. The trouble is that there are so many different syllables, it takes a scholar years to learn them all. In the Chinese language, there are more than fifty thousand and most of these are being used even today. A Chinese student does not master the writing of his language until he is beyond the age at which an American student may have graduated from college-say, twenty-five years old. In comparison with his thousands of characters, the American schoolboy has to learn only twenty-six letters. Therefore the next step in the development of the alphabet was to have a symbol, or letter, for each sound that was used in the language being spoken. There are many more sounds that a human being can use than we have in our alphabet, and the alphabets used for other languages have in them certain letters that we do not need in writing the English language. But also we have some letters that they do not need. No alphabet needs more than thirty or forty letters. A child can master these in a year or two. Writing with letters instead of with pictures is more than five thousand years old. Just as we got our alphabet from the Greeks, they got theirs from the Semitic peoples-the Phoenicians and the Jews and other ancient peoples who spoke Semitic languages.
The Greek alphabet is the first real alphabet and it is also the predecessor of the Latin alphabet. The early forms of this alphabet are written with the use of a syllabary. Also, it is adapted from the Phoenician alphabet with changes in the use of letters. The original alphabet only contains 24 letters. In Phoenician, the letters used were named after an object whose name started with that letter. Nowadays, there are a lot of alphabets that are being used today that were developed from the Greek alphabet. You can also find Greek letters that appear outside of the written Greek language in some forums such as mathematics and fraternity names.
Besides direct spread of Latin systems, the Latin alphabet is used to write languages originally written in other scripts (or none), a process called Romanization. Romanization can create new Latin alphabets-based system. For language already written in another script, most people consider Romanized system and original system as the same language, though. That is perhaps due to its direct representing original writing/speech. Although Romanized system is taken as original language, Romanization is in fact Latin alphabets expansion. The original language is annexed into Latin systems. Romanized system brings people closer to other Latin systems. Knowing the Romanized system, people are readily to learn other Latin systems. Romanization also brings new words into existing Latin systems, whose speakers use some Romanized words as foreign words, which would enter native vocabulary over time. Romanization continues due to the legibility of Romanized system. As existing Latin systems spread and grow, Romanization goes on to non-Latin system regions. Non-Latin systems are unlikely overpowered by Romanized systems alone, but it seems they would be overwhelmed by the overall expansion of Latin systems.

One of visions characteristics is horizontal-vertical asymmetry. Adapted to natural environment, our eyes are shaped and aligned horizontally. We view broader horizontally than vertically. When looking forward, we detect info better in both sides than up/down. The eyes (visions) characteristics of reading in different directions correlate with writings characteristics in those directions. Horizontal and vertical readings essential difference has to do with the asymmetry between horizontal and vertical visual spans, which has anatomic and neuroscientific evidences. Horizontal visual span is larger than vertical visual span, as mentioned in  among others. It is consistent with the anatomy of macula (of retina), which is oval-shaped with long horizontal axis  .
The writing represents speech notion Speech and writing originated independently of each other. Human speech probably appeared long time before writing. Earliest writings developed from drawings. They were of visual origin, as pictographs, ideograms. As time went by, writings were spatially arranged sequentially in lines, corresponding to the sequential property of speech in time domain. As writing systems evolved in the alphabetic direction, writings and speech associated with each other tighter and tighter, continuing to present day. The alphabets lost pictographic property. As alphabetic systems have replaced their pictographic  predecessors and gained prevalence, it seems natural to conclude that the evolution of writing systems is to better represent language sounds. This conclusion is elegant, intuitive, reasonable and basing on facts and researches. It certainly cannot explain some cases, for instance, the Chinese didnt evolve into alphabet. However, the Chinese characters are blamed to be too complex to represent speech. The modern Chinese writing is more tightly associated with spoken Chinese than ancient Chinese writing does. Moreover, characters have been simplified in mainland China. Chinese writing looks like taking a small step towards representing speech. Little doubts have been casted on this conclusion, although many scholars consider writing as more than simply representing speech. Representing speech seems a destined direction. Lets be a little skeptical on this natural conclusion.
