Going to kindergarten is a big deal for children. If your child did not go to preschool or even if he did, he might feel some apprehension about everything he is going to need to know when he gets to elementary school. Even during the summer months, kids slide backward, forgetting most of what they had learned during the school year, simply because they are out of practice. Rather than letting your child get out of practice or feel out of place going to kindergarten, you can use free kids learning games online to boost your childs self confidence and enhance his skills before entering kindergarten.

Kindergarten ABC worksheets should have different activities to help children identify the various letters of the alphabet. The activities may involve very simple things like colouring, ticking, drawing a line to match items etc. Using attractive illustrations and cartoon characters would make it more fun for children. The activities should be graded, i.e initial activities should be very simple and easy (but should be fun with good pictures etc, so as to interest the child); later worksheets may involve a little bit more work. Care should be taken to give children worksheets that they are capable of doing. This involves understanding and monitoring the child continually, since the level of attainment of different children would often be quite different. The worksheet should challenge the child but not overwhelm her. If the worksheet is too easy or too repetitive, it may bore the child and she would not be happy. If the activity is too difficult it would frustrate her and she would not like to take up more sheets. The children should love to do the worksheets; they should not be thrust upon them. Also doing only worksheets alone repeatedly would not be very productive. You should have a range of physical games and activities as well that would reinforce the concepts learnt.

With over 25 years of experience with children, and two of them as a kindergarten teachers aide, I can tell you that your childs first days and weeks of kindergarten can be a smooth transition. I had many children in my kindergarten that just needed to be prepared for kindergarten by being told what to expect in order to feel safe walking into the classroom. What will the first day be like? What will we learn? What kind of field trips will we go on? Most important, will anyone at school think Im special? Who are all the adults I will be spending time with while Im at school? What happens in the classroom throughout the year? Make sure you read as many books about going to kindergarten to your child as you can. Look for books that talk about all aspects of the school year. Take your child to the school and walk them around the different classrooms they will be spending time in. The library, the gym, the music room, the kindergarten classrooms, the school office, and the playground. Introduce him to the principal, the secretary, the teachers, and the teachers aides. You will give them the best possible start to their school year by helping them feel comfortable in their new surroundings.

The reason why poetry is usually learnt by heart at this stage is that kindergarten children are rarely fully proficient in the official language at this stage. They can normally sing it and say repetitive stuff but when it comes to reading there is still some time. Their kindergarten teachers will know this and that is why songs and poems are always a main feature in the education of children. You should borrow the example from them and also start getting your children to recite poems and songs for the kindergarten graduation ceremony.

Ideally, reports would benefit the child, the educator and the parents. The grading process (when done correctly) lets parents and teachers know whether the child is grasping and understanding certain ideas and concepts. Reviewing the childs work allows teachers the opportunity to see whether the child is ready to move on to other things or needs more time. The grading process also helps teachers evaluate the kindergarten class as a whole. If the majority of the students are doing well, the class may be ready to move on to new topics. This also helps teachers understand and decide whether certain teaching methods and lesson plans are working.

One first step may be to simply ask around, do you know other families that have children in kindergarten already, and what where their experiences with that school? See if local kindergartens have a reputation in town, either for being highly recommended, or perhaps for not being a very good school. Next look into the logistics of some of the local private and public kindergartens. For instance, how qualified are the teachers? What does each schools curriculum consist of? What subjects and activities are encouraged? What are each schools rules and guidelines, for things such as disciplinary actions, school closures, emergency procedures and other important policies that you will want to be aware of. What are each schools philosophies with styles of teaching, and student learning? And are these philosophies in line with your own values? What type of nutritional options are offered for snacks, and lunch?
